This volume presents the proceedings of the International Middleware Conference held in Leuven, Belgium, from December 1–4, 2008. Marking the ninth edition of this annual event, which began in 1998, the conference aims to be the premier venue for significant middleware results. Over the past decade, middleware has become essential in our interconnected world, with its principles integrated into the architectures driving the information age. The conference remains a key platform for new initiatives and advancements in middleware, becoming increasingly competitive. This year, out of 117 submissions, only 21 were accepted, resulting in an acceptance rate of less than 18%. The submissions came from authors in 23 countries, highlighting its global reach. As the conference enters its second decade, middleware has achieved notable success in technical innovations, advanced capabilities, and practical applications that impact society, industry, government, and academia. This progress signifies a maturation of the field, reflecting its importance and relevance in today's technological landscape.
