The Hasselblad Award, established in 1980, is a prestigious international photography honor, awarded annually except in 1983. It recognizes photographers for significant achievements, whether through pioneering work, influence on younger generations, or impactful projects. Walid Raad, a Lebanese/American artist, was named the 31st recipient of this award, presented in New York on March 8, 2011. Each year, the award winner's works are showcased in an exhibition at the Hasselblad Center in Gothenburg, accompanied by a publication produced in collaboration with Steidl. Raad is known for his innovative approach to photography, particularly through “The Atlas Group,” which explores the interplay between documentary photography, archives, and history. His work critically examines Lebanon's contemporary history, employing unique methods to address war imagery and political conflict. Raad’s art challenges conventional war photography, prompting discussions on visuality, memory, and violence. The dead weight of this quarrel features several unpublished pieces from The Atlas Group. Born in 1967 in Chbanieh, Lebanon, Raad engages with photography, video, text, installation, and performance, exhibiting widely. He has received numerous accolades, including the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize and a Guggenheim fellowship, and has been an Associate Professor at The Cooper Union School of Art since 2002.
