English Not until in the 8th century, and initially only on the continent, were inhabitants of the British Isles called Anglo-Saxons. This volume covers their history from Late Antiquity to the Norman conquest of 1066, focusing less on the islands and more on their history within the European context. Neither the Anglo-Saxon past, nor the history of neighboring European peoples, the papacy, or early medieval economy and culture can be understood without these connections across the English Channel. Der Band behandelt ihre Geschichte von der Spatantike bis zur normannischen Eroberung 1066. Im Vordergrund steht dabei weniger eine auf die Insel beschrankte Darstellung, sondern die Beschreibung ihrer Geschichte im europaischen Kontext. Weder die angelsachsische Vergangenheit noch die Geschichte der europaischen Nachbarvolker, des Papsttums oder der fruhmittelalterlichen Wirtschaft und Kultur sind ohne diese Verbindungen uber den Armelkanal hinweg zu verstehen.
