Ahead of Their Time. Heinrich Campendonk, Heinrich Nauen, Johann Thorn Prikker 100 years ago, Johan Thorn Prikker's avant-garde stained-glass windows were installed in the Dreikönigskirche church in Neuss. How was it possible that at that time the city of Neuss became a nucleus of the international modern art scene? The volume examines the development of modernity in the Rhineland, focusing on the Dutchman Thorn Prikker (1868–1932), his Krefeld student Heinrich Campendonk (1889–1957) and their mutual friend Heinrich Nauen (1880–1940). Another artist highlighted in this volume is Peter Behrens (1868–1940). Next to paintings and drawings, these artists designed textiles, furniture, wall paintings, mosaics, and stained-glass windows for private and public buildings, as well as for churches across the Rhineland. They established extensive contacts with colleagues, patrons and clients and took advantage of the existing networks of “Sonderbund” and “Deutscher Werkbund.” A selection of nearly 200 works illustrates the versatile creative genius of these artists highly controversial in their days but well-established today.
