In the heart of a region that has been such a crucial part of the history of humanity for millennia, the Kurdish people have managed to build a society founded upon the principles of openness to the world, a commitment to education, gender equality, with women participating in a wide variety of fields, and a secular society that allows many different beliefs to coexist peacefully. The Kurdish people's steadfast identity and legacy, like a tree with deep roots, has resisted the strongest of storms that have raged throughout its history. The Kurds are not merely those fighters that make a constant appearance on televised news the world over, but a people who could be veritable exemplars for the Middle East. Since 1980 when I first encountered these people, I have followed in their footsteps, poised between modernity and tradition, always struggling nobly for their freedom. In 2013, I undertook a major reportage on their capacity to resist, their sorrows, their hopes and the place that this society reserves for the preservation of its culture and spiritualities. My ardent desire has been to provide a fitting tribute to the Kurdish people and to show their contribution to all of humanity. -- REZA
