This collection features first-hand accounts from brave Afghan women who refuse to be silenced by the Taliban. Following decades of progress, the situation for women and girls in Afghanistan has drastically deteriorated since the Taliban regained control on August 15, 2021, leading to a regression in social, political, and economic freedoms. Despite the oppressive regime, Afghan women are determined to resist the erosion of their rights. Compiled by artist and activist Nahid Shahalimi, the voices of thirteen influential Afghan women—politicians, journalists, scientists, filmmakers, artists, coders, and musicians—shine through. They share reflections on their upbringing and their efforts to empower women and girls over the past two decades. Amidst the fear and pain of losing their homeland, these women highlight what has already been taken from them: freedom, self-determination, and joy. The book serves as a powerful reminder to support Afghan girls and women, emphasizing their right to freedom and dignity.
