This book offers a collective portrait of the United Kingdom during the 2020 national lockdown, featuring an introductory text by The Duchess of Cambridge. It revolves around three central themes: Helpers and Heroes, Your New Normal, and Acts of Kindness, showcasing 100 community photographs that capture the essence of this extraordinary period. The project, initiated by The Duchess, aimed to create a unique representation of the UK's experiences during lockdown, inviting individuals of all ages to submit portraits taken during May and June 2020. A panel of judges carefully selected 100 images based on the emotions and experiences they conveyed. The resulting photographs reflect a personal and poignant record of life during lockdown, highlighting virtual celebrations, community solidarity, and the dedication of NHS staff and keyworkers, alongside the struggles of illness, isolation, and loss. The images evoke a spectrum of emotions, from humor and creativity to grief and hope, illustrating both shared and individual experiences. Accompanying each photo are the stories of the entrants, providing deeper insight into the moments captured. The publication also features works from the nationwide outdoor exhibition, with proceeds supporting the National Portrait Gallery and the mental health charity Mind.
