A young Indigenous woman enters a colonizer-run dragon academy after bonding with a hatchling, setting the stage for a captivating new fantasy series. On the remote island of Masquapaug, fifteen-year-old Anequs discovers a dragon's egg and forms a bond with its hatchling, delighting her people who remember the days when dragons roamed freely, helping them thrive. However, the Anglish conquerors of her land have a different perspective on dragon-rearing and who should be involved. Reluctantly, they allow Anequs to enroll in an Anglish dragon school on the mainland, where failure means her dragon's destruction. Despite these obstacles, she is determined to learn what she needs to support her dragon, even if it means self-education. However, she refuses to conform to the meek expectations of Anglish society.
