Struik, Cape Town, South Africa, case bound ( in laminated boards), about 11 by 22 cm., 4.5 by 8.75 inches, 98 pages, and 60 full-page color photographic plates In spite of its' small size and the fact that it is now somewhat out-of-date, this book remains one of the most popular, and most used guides to the shells found in the waters off South Africa. In all, it covers 527 species across the major classes of the Mollusca with the greatest coverage given to the gastropods. The text of the book makes up the first part of the book and the photographs of the specimens follow in the second part. There are no keys given for the plates, the specimens are numbered and the numbers refer you back to the information about the shells in the text. The photographs are well done. There is minimal descriptive material about the shells except for the shell name with author and date, where in South Africa the shell is found, and a comment that may be useful in identifying the shell. Although this is a used book, it can easily pass as new.
