In the process of moving from New York City to Los Angeles, 16-year-old Morene Knightshade is left feeling lost as she grapples with the apparent loss of her best friend, Gavin, an alien with superpowers, just like the superheroes who had failed to save her from the destruction of the crashing planes she'd witnessed when she was small. Gavin had abandoned her, leaving only the mask that he'd let her borrow, the mask that made Mo feel strong when she wore it. Mo's world is shadowy, the buildings on the metropolitan skyline, casting huge shadows over her head, shadows she knows she can fly out of if she fights hard enough, a fight that she's about to participate in. Hollywood, a new school, and the potential to become a stuntwoman, call out to Morene as she takes the mask with her wherever she goes, prepared to make new friends, unaware that there's a new enemy lying in wait.
