This work by the Chairman of the Mathematics Department at Princeton University encompasses essential content for students in school and college courses. It stands as a classic reference from which many contemporary textbooks draw their material. The book is structured into two main sections: an introductory part focusing on the number system of algebra and a principal part dedicated to algebra itself. Currently, students face exorbitant costs for basic math textbooks, often exceeding $200 each, with some high schools listing multiple required texts at similar prices. Publishers frequently release new editions by altering a few pages, making it difficult for students to find affordable used copies. Consequently, students are spending over a thousand dollars each semester on textbooks, often supported by federally guaranteed student loans that many will struggle to repay, ultimately impacting taxpayers and increasing the federal deficit. This reprint aims to bring sanity back to the college textbook market. Since the most recent college and high school algebra texts contain nothing not found in this more affordable edition, there is hope that college administrators will consider adopting this book to ease the financial burden on students.
