Winnetou, the only Native American chief who could have united the various quarreling tribes and reached an equitable settlement with the whites is murdered by some gold-seeking thugs. His tragic death foreshadows the death of his people. Winnetou is not an historical Apache Indian, but rather a symbol of "natural human innocence".
