On 16 October 2017, Daphne Caruana Galizia, a prominent Maltese journalist, was murdered by a bomb placed under her car, an act that shook Maltese society and politics. For over thirty years, she wielded her pen like a razor, fiercely advocating for democracy, which she defined not just as majority rule but as encompassing minority rights, checks and balances, rule of law, accountability, and good governance. Above all, she championed freedom of expression as the essential tool for scrutinizing authorities.
