Alif has never left West Sumatra, where he spent his childhood searching for fallen durian, playing soccer on rice paddies, and swimming in Lake Maninjau. His mother wishes for him to attend an Islamic boarding school, a pesantren, while he dreams of public high school. Reluctantly, he embarks on a three-day bus journey to Madani Pesantren (MP) in a remote Javanese village. On his first day, he is inspired by the phrase "man jadda wajada"—he who gives his all will surely succeed. United by shared punishment, he quickly befriends five boys from different regions, forming the Fellowship of the Manara. Beneath the mosque’s minaret, they dream of distant lands like America and Europe, uncertain of where their aspirations might lead. They understand the importance of dreams, no matter how lofty, and believe that God is The Listener. This narrative is the first in a trilogy by A. Fuadi, a former reporter and social entrepreneur. He studied at George Washington University and Royal Holloway, University of London. A portion of the trilogy's royalties will support Komunitas Menara, a volunteer organization dedicated to providing free schools, libraries, clinics, and soup kitchens for the underprivileged.
