While Pharaoh Amenhotep III, more builder than warrior, orders the construction of temples, monuments, pylons, and gigantic statues, Queen Tiyi builds her luxurious palace in Malgatta. There, she receives ambassadors from foreign countries with which she trades and who honor her with multiple favors. Aware that the Egyptian gods are faltering, Tiyi neglects to strengthen their powers, preferring to maintain good relations with foreign lands. Meanwhile, the Thebans, at the heart of Egyptian society, work in tune with the seasons to reinforce their freedom to think and act. Roaming the countryside along the Nile, Neby, a young public scribe, survives through the work offered to her in various agricultural enterprises on wheat, flax, or papyrus fields. During a census of a village's livestock, Neby catches the attention of the High Priest Panehesy, who will teach her the writing of hieroglyphs. Troubled, she discovers a strange feeling that will favor and seal her destiny.
