Before the publication of this book, the author, at the urging of medical students, had initiated very popular annual courses in "The Philosophy of Medicine." These courses covered such subjects as population control, abortion, euthanasia, anxieties, psychotropic drugs, sex deviations, marriage, social problems, and crime. Consequently, this book, written for the professional as well as the nonprofessional, evolved along these lines in discussions with religious, legal, medical, and other groups.
