These stories from the final days of apartheid in South Africa earned the Noma Award, establishing Njabulo Ndebele as a significant literary voice. He has emerged as a powerful advocate for cultural freedom across the African continent. Currently the Chancellor of Witwatersrand University, Ndebele began publishing these stories while in exile in Lesotho during the 1980s. Ndebele's stories first appeared in Staffrider magazine, an innovative platform associated with the Soweto branch of South African PEN, which emerged after the Soweto riots of the mid-1970s. The magazine symbolized the resilience of un-ticketed commuters from black townships, and Ndebele's contributions helped shape a new tone in black South African literature that transcended the confines of apartheid.
