Sadness, murder, and mayhem abound in this collection of three unique novellas. Each tale delves into the anti-Communist hysteria of the 1950s and the era's obsession with flying saucers, blending genres like metaphysical science fiction, espionage, satire, and crime noir. The first novella, “The Fallen Nun,” unfolds in 1959, where protagonist Kyle Black discovers a dead nun in his marijuana garden. His quest to unravel the mystery leads him to bizarre encounters with an Irish Cyclops named Finn mac Cumhall, a giant Devil Bat created by a mad scientist, two murderous tabloid journalists, and a sickly extraterrestrial abducted by a time-traveling mother superior. In “Communist Town, U.S.A.,” young FBI agent Philip Trowbridge infiltrates a small Wisconsin town in 1955, rumored to harbor underground Communist activity, where several agents have mysteriously vanished. The third story, set in 1952, features Curt Adamson, a blacklisted left-wing Hollywood screenwriter. Struggling after being rejected by studios, he is recruited by a covert spy agency to write a screenplay for an undisclosed purpose. Despite being told he lacks a “need to know,” Adamson is determined to uncover the truth behind his project, revealing a plot far more bizarre and sinister than the low-budget horror and sci-fi films that tarnished his reputation.
