Dennis Yates Wheatley (1897—1977) was a prolific English author known for his stylish thrillers and occult novels, becoming one of the world's bestselling writers from the 1930s through the 1960s. His Gregory Sallust series significantly influenced Ian Fleming's James Bond stories. Born in South London, Wheatley was the eldest of three in an upper-middle-class family that owned a wine business. He struggled academically and was expelled from Dulwich College, later becoming a British Merchant Navy officer cadet on HMS Worcester. During World War II, he served in the London Controlling Section, which coordinated military deception strategies. His writing skills led to work with the War Office, where he penned various papers, including strategies against a potential German invasion. Wheatley passed away on November 11, 1977, having authored over 70 books and sold more than 50 million copies.
