As a soldier in the French army, Pierre Bourdieu documented the suffering and resilience of the Algerian people during the Algerian War (1954-1962) through thousands of photographs. Despite being instructed to see them as "enemies," Bourdieu empathized with their struggle against French rule and poverty. Recognizing that his education failed to explain the wartime reality he witnessed, he sought to develop a new ethnographic-sociological science based on his experiences, which would later define his work and elucidate the dynamics of French colonialism and Algerian resistance. This volume features 130 of Bourdieu's photographs alongside key excerpts from his writings, many of which remain untranslated in English. The images serve as both aesthetic objects and poignant commentary on the accompanying texts. Bourdieu's contributions established a benchmark for ethnographic photography and critique. Additionally, the volume includes a 2001 interview where he reflects on his experiences in Algeria, their impact on his intellectual journey, his role in transforming photography into a tool for social inquiry, and the responsibilities of committed intellectuals in a troubled world.
