    理想国. Lǐxiǎng guó. Republic
    • This indispensable guide offers a comprehensive commentary on both Divisions of Heidegger's Being and Time, making it essential for newcomers and specialists alike. It begins with a non-technical exposition of Heidegger's fundamental question—"What does it mean to be?"—and gradually focuses more closely on the text. Using Joan Stambaugh's translation, the author clarifies key concepts through concrete illustrations and references to relevant works by Heidegger, both prior to and following the publication of Being and Time. Originally published in the early sixties as one of the first English-language commentaries, this masterful guide by Magda King has been significantly expanded to cover the entirety of Being and Time. Its renderings of Heidegger's German terms have been revised to align with Stambaugh's new translation, and discussions of Heidegger's later texts are supplemented with references to his recently published early works. In this revised edition prepared by John Llewelyn, King's guide serves as an ideal companion volume to Stambaugh's translation. Critics praise King's work for its directness, simplicity, and clarity, achieving these qualities without sacrificing detail or accuracy. This makes the guide an extraordinarily effective resource for navigating the complexities of Heidegger's work, positioning it as a nearly perfect companion text for readers engaging with Being and Time.

The Republic is a Socratic dialogue written by Plato around 380 BC concerning the definition of justice and the order and character of the just city-state and the just man. It is Plato's best-known work and has proven to be one of the most intellectually and historically influential works of philosophy and political theory. In it, Socrates along with various Athenians and foreigners discuss the meaning of justice and examine whether or not the just man is happier than the unjust man by considering a series of different cities coming into existence "in speech," culminating in a city ruled by philosopher-kings; and by examining the nature of existing regimes.
