The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia represents one of those unique collaborations between three companies in two different countries: the Volkswagenwerke in Wolfsburg, Germany and Wilhelm Karmann in Osnabruck, Germany, and the Ghia coachworks in Turin, Italy. It also represents the efforts of four men who have all gone down in automobile history for their achievements: Heinrich Nordhoff at VW, Wilhelm Karmann at Karmann, Mario Boano and Luigi Segre at Ghia. From the moment the pretty coupe walked onto the world's stage it went straight into the motoring Hall of Fame. Interestingly, where most coupes of the time had some pretense towards being sporting, generally with a mildly hotted up engine, the Karmann Ghia was simply stock VW Beetle from the mechanical point of view. In other words, it was still a 72-75mph car, it just looked great doing it! And that is why owners loved it. By 1961 VW introduced the Karmann 1500 based on the Type 3 platform to supplement the original. It was nowhere near as successful and was withdrawn from production in 1969, long before its older and more famous sibling. There is a strong and enthusiastic following for the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia coupe all around the world, a movement that seems to grow each year.

The 308 GT4 was a replacement for the original 246 series Dino. It wore the Dino badges and it shared the 246's transverse mid-engined layout. It was a 2+2 rather than an uncompromising two seater, and it broke new ground in having a body styled by Bertone. Sales were steady but not spectacular. The Dino badging was dropped in May 1976 and production began to trail off during 1978 - the last one was built in January 1980. The Mondial didn't fare very well - it was a heavier car and a disappointment to Ferrari fans and only survived until 1982. However, the Mondial Quattravalvole showed that Modena had got the formula right this time and when a gorgeous cabriolet version joined the original coupe in 1984, sales practically doubled overnight. There are plenty of Ferrari enthusiasts who number the models in this book among their most coveted cars, and they will find plenty to feed their passion on its pages.

Aston Martin was started by Bamford and Martin and after a constant struggle to stay afloat, the company failed in 1925. But the name Aston-Martin was rescued, first by Renwick & Bertelli, and then by Gordon Sutherland in 1933 who brought the company into the real world by realizing that if you wanted to go racing you needed to be backed up by a sound financial structure which was not constantly being drained by the apparent need to maintain a reputation by being seen in competition. By giving support to the many private owners, he did manage to keep the name before the public.

The street bikes are a spin-off of the racing machines. For homologation 200 850s were built for sale with 16-inch rims, full electrics but with a de-tuned engine to produce about 100hp. Alongside the ordinary production bikes were the 888 SP Series of which the Roche-replica is the most powerful, recording 122bhp. Over the years the series became gradually more refined and forgiving, going down to 108bhp. In 1992 the 851 had the same specification as the SP4 apart from styling and in 1993 the Strada was given the 888 engine. The 968 was introduced to replace the 944. It came with only one engine option, two body styles (coup/142 and cabriolet), and manual or triptronic transmission. Coming in as the cheapest Porsche to rival the Renault Alpine and Audi S2, it still had a superbly balanced chassis. The Club Sport was introduced to bring Porsche ownership to a wider market. Several items were deleted, notably the rear seats, and decals on teh side distinguish it from its more expensive brother. It was also lighter, which banished the excess body roll and the oversteer was controllable. With falling sales in 1993, a short-run Turbo S was produced with a rear wing, bonnet scoops and front spoiler. 0-60 was under 5 secs, the 3-litre engine produced 305bhp and had a 6-speed manual gearbox. The 968 Sporot slotted between the CS and standard 968, a little less basic than the CS. The first Sprites were designed as affordable sports cars. They were simple and basic with a tuned Austin A35 engine. The 1961 restyle gave the Sprite a more conventional face; at the same time an MG version was announced. The power output was increased from the same sized engine. In 1962 the engine was increased to 1098cc and 55bhp. Winding windows came with the Mk III in 1964 as well as a revised folding hood. With other small alterations production of these small sports cars continued until July 1971. On its introduction in 1978 the rotary-engined RX-7 was a revelation. It was stylish, quick; smooth and the handling was agile. Power was boosted in 1981 to 115bhp which English racing driver Vic Elford increased with the addition of a turbo. The second generation models were introduced in 1986 with a completely restyled body and engine modifications that took the power output to 148bhp. Two years later the Mazda RX-7 Turbo had 200bhp and also the option of a convertible body. The normally aspirated cars ceased in 1989 with the Turbo remaining until 1992. When conceived Rover thought it would be popular with weekend farmers who wanted some luxury as well as go-anywhere ability from their vehicle. Nash had wanted to build a small economy car for some time and after several studies in the early 50s Nash Kelvinator Corp. announced that the Austin Motor Co. would build the cars on their behalf. These cars embodied Austin A40 and A30 components in the Nash-designed car of which hardtop and Drophead coupT version were produced. In 1956 the body style was µAmericanized' and the engine changed to the A50 making it more acceptable to the US market. By 1957 it was available to the British market and fitted with the B-series engine. Production came to an end in 1962. Announced in 1955 to replace the TF the MGA was a radical change compared with the older cars. It had a streamlined and curvaceous full-width body. This was a car in need of extra performance and in 1958 the Twin-Cam came with a twin-overhead-camshaft, 1588cc version of the B-series engine. Like many other short run vehicles the Twin-Cam has attained cult status and is much sought after. The cars to benefit from this development were the later 1600 and Mk II with larger engines and good performance.
