Cet ouvrage est publié à l'occasion de l'exposition présentée à la Fondation Pierre Gianadda, à Martigny (Suisse), du 1er décembre 2017 au 10 juin 2018.00Estampes et affiches nous immergent dans l?univers incroyablement moderne et audacieux d?Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Prêtées par l?un des plus importants collectionneurs privés du peintre, les 90 créations exposées couvrent presque toute la période de la production lithographique de Toulouse-Lautrec, de 1891 à 1899. Parmi elles figurent des épreuves d?essai inédites, dont des tirages uniques et des estampes rarissimes. Presque tous ses travaux les plus célèbres sont représentés, ainsi que quelques autres signés Théophile Alexandre Steinlen et Louis Anquetin, deux artistes qui lui sont proches.

Das gesamte graphische Werk von Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec entstand am Ende eines ebenso kurzen wie intensiven Lebens. Innerhalb nur eines Jahrzehnts schuf der aus dem französischen Hochadel stammende Künstler, fasziniert von den Möglichkeiten einer damals neuen Technik, 351 meist farbige Steindrucke. Seine von japanischen Holzschnitten inspirierten Farblithographien wurden mit ihren starken Kontrasten und der Verbindung von Schrift und Bild stilistisch zum Ausgangspunkt der modernen Plakatkunst. Der seit einem Unfall kleinwüchsige Aristokrat verbrachte seine Zeit vorwiegend in den Cafés, Cabarets und Bordellen rund um den Montmartre und schilderte diese Umgebung ohne Überheblichkeit oder falsches Mitleid. Mit seinen ungeschminkten Szenen des mondänen Pariser Nachtlebens prägte Lautrec ganz entschieden das Bild einer legendären Zeit, der so genannten „Belle Epoque". Die berühmte Sammlung des Berliners Otto Gerstenberg, der vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg dieses ganz außergewöhnliche Œuvre Toulouse-Lautrecs lückenlos vereinte, umfasst neben Widmungsexemplaren auch Vorzugs-, Zustands- und Probedrucke. Zusätzlich abgerundet wird diese von Götz Adriani zusammengestellte Präsentation des kompletten graphischen Werks mit Gemälden, Pastellen und Skizzen des Künstlers.
