In the aftermath, Merckx showed respect by refusing to wear the leader's jersey the next day. Ocana finally won the Tour de France in 1973 when Merckx was absent, a victory that might have been unlikely had Merckx been present. He continued to achieve success until his decline, reflecting the immense pressures he faced during his career. An enigmatic figure, he struggled for acceptance in both Spain and France and tragically died under mysterious circumstances at just 48, leaving behind a legacy of fierce determination and complexity.
