Bonn, no longer the federal capital since the Berlin decision of the German Bundestag on June 20, 1991, still represents German politics and will continue to do so in the future. While politics will now largely take place in Berlin, Bonn will benefit from legally anchored billions that will make the loss of power more bearable and give the city a new image as a center of science and new technologies. However, one thing will not change: Bonn, with its 300,000 residents, boasts numerous witnesses to its 2,000-year history, its vibrant city life, parks and forests, large museums, and small idylls in half-timbered villages and Gründerzeit districts that have survived the wars unscathed. Those who do not come for political reasons will need a few days to discover this Bonn.

Zur Liebe auf den ersten Blick verführt die Stadt am Main selten. Schuld daran ist die verwirrende Vielfalt ihrer Gesichter, die eine fast 2000jährige Geschichte hinterlassen hat. Frankfurt ist Messemetropole, Anziehungspunkt für Wirtschaftsmagnaten, wichtigster Banken- und Börsenplatz Europas und - wenn schon nicht Capitale der Republik, seit es Bonn bei der Wahl 1949 unterlag - so doch Hauptstadt des Geldes, denn hier residiert die Bundesbank. Doch auch das Schöpferische sorgt für Ruhm: Frankfurt war Adresse von Goethe und Schopenhauer, von Philosophen wie Adorno und Habermas, und es spart nicht an Huldigungsstätten für die Künste, wie Oper, Theater und Museumsufer beweisen. Schließlich liegen am einstigen Krönungsort weltlicher Herrscher die Wurzeln der deutschen Demokratie. Dafür steht die Paulskirche, in der im 19. Jahrhundert die Nationalversammlung tagte.
