Die erste Ausgabe dieser Schrift erschien 1914 in englischer Sprache unter dem Titel „Dr. Montessoris Own Handbook“. Darin betont Maria Montessori in einer Vorbemerkung, dass diese Schrift das einzige authentische und von ihr autorisierte Handbuch der Montessori-Methode sei. Ziel des Buches ist eine knappe für die Umsetzung in die Praxis geeignete Darstellung ihrer pädagogischen Konzeption.
