Thomas Glover, podnikavý skotský obchodník, se jako dvacetiletý vydává do Japonska k anglické firmě obchodující s čajem. Jeho kariéra je úspěšná, obchody se rozrůstají a tak se Glover stává zámožným a váženým mužem. Jeho rozsáhlé obchodní aktivity ho přivedou až k účasti na povstání korunního prince Mucuhita proti poslednímu šógunovi v r. 1867.
