I protagonisti appartengono a un unico clan, quello dei McCaslin-Edmonds, e gli episodi si riferiscono a vari momenti della loro lunga saga, a partire dagli anni della Guerre Civile. Tema dominante, sempre ricorrente nella narrativa faulkneriana, è quello delle relazioni tra bianchi e neri e dell'attaccamento alla terra d'origine che li accomuna. Il racconto centrale "L'orso" è considerato dalla critica una delle pagine più belle dello scrittore americano. La ricchezza delle sfumature e la poesia del linguaggio fanno di questi racconti-epopea l'opera più matura di William Faulkner.
