De Main is een wijk in Montreal, een eerste toevluchtsoord voor de grote stromen immigranten: Europeanen, Aziaten, joden, katholieken. Het is een doorgangshuis waar de ouderen en zwakken achterblijven, waar de misdaad welig tiert dankzij de armoede en de ellende. Claude LaPointe, inspecteur van politie, is hier de centrale figuur. De Main is zijn wijk, al dertig jaar. Iedere uithoek kent hij, iedere zwerver, elke pooier en hoer, elke gangster, ieder ogenblik van wanhoop.
