Die 'Extremsituation', in der alle Abwehrmechanismen, die der Mensch gegen die Angst vor dem Tod errichtet hat, plötzlich und gleichzeitig zusammenbrechen, erlebt der KZ-Häftling physisch und psychisch; aber auch das Kind, das eine Schizophrenie entwickelt, zeigt auf eine Situation, die äußerlich ganz verschieden ist, eine emotional völlig ähnliche Reaktion.

Die "symbolischen Wunden" sind hier die Riten der Initiation, deren Bedeutung der Autor im Hinblick auf anthropologische und psychoanalytische Erklärungen, insbesondere die von Freud in Totem und Tabu, untersucht. Janusz Korczak est mort à Treblinka en 1942 avec les deux cents enfants de l'orphelinat qu'il dirigeait à Varsovie. Médecin, écrivain et éducateur, sa vie a été marquée par un profond amour pour les enfants. Ses ouvrages, tels que Comment aimer un enfant et Le droit de l'enfant au respect, soulignent que l'enfant est un être à part entière, méritant attention et amour. Le monde redécouvre Korczak, notamment à l'occasion du centenaire de sa naissance, célébré par l'UNESCO et l'Année internationale de l'Enfance en 1979. Comment aimer un enfant, écrit en 1915 et réédité en 1929, reflète ses doutes et son approche non péremptoire. „Tante volte nel corso degli anni mi è stato chiesto quali siano state le più importanti influenze formatrici della mia vita. È ovvio che l'influenza più importante è sempre quella dei genitori e della famiglia, ma se mi concentrassi su questo aspetto dovrei scrivere un'autobiografia. Una volta, a proposito delle biografie, Freud ebbe a dire che chi si accinge a scriverne 'si vota inevitabilmente alla menzogna, all'omissione e all'adulazione'; e io, in quanto freudiano, credo che, a maggior ragione, queste parole valgano anche per le autobiografie. Infatti, quando ho cercato di richiamare alla mente gli avvenimenti più importanti della mia vita, mi sono accorto che tendevo a conferire eccessivo valore a certi fatti e a dimenticarne per mia convenienza altri, proprio come Freud aveva ammonito. Pensai dunque che se volevo presentare in un libro materiale di natura personale, dovevo conferirgli una forma diversa dall'autobiografia. La formula che alla fine decisi di usare fu la selezione di un certo numero di saggi, la cui stesura copre un lungo arco di tempo e che non sono mai stati pubblicati in volume.
