A VW ad in the 60s claimed the Beetle and the Coke bottle were the two best-known shapes globally. The Bug's biography includes figures like Adolf Hitler, Henry Ford, and Walt Disney, making it as much a character as a car—a hero and antihero that has repeatedly appeared in history. Originally built as a tool of Nazi propaganda, the Beetle evolved into a counterculture icon through American marketing. In 1938, Hitler expressed his desire for an affordable car for the German people, leading to the production of the "KdF-wagen," designed by Ferdinand Porsche and financed by the German Labor Front. During the war, the factory produced military equipment using forced labor. Post-war, under British control, it struggled to gain traction in Germany, while American GIs brought a few to the U.S. The American auto industry dismissed small cars until 1959, when VW's innovative ad campaign transformed the Beetle's image. It became a symbol of cool, even featuring in films like "Herbie the Love Bug." By the 1980s, it lost ground to Japanese competitors. To revitalize its appeal, VW introduced the New Beetle in 1998, designed in California and built in Mexico. The Bug's evolution into a global product was complete, making it a cultural artifact of the century.
