Set in Fonzaso, Italy, during the tumultuous period between the two World Wars, the story follows a strong-willed midwife's daughter who falls in love with a local man planning to emigrate to America. As the rise of Mussolini and the looming threat of the Nazis cast a shadow over their relationship, she must navigate the challenges of war and learn to survive on her own, testing her resilience and determination in the face of adversity.
