E tra mito, filosofia e fantascienza, la sua storia avrà un finale fiabesco, che lo accomuna a quello commovente e immorale della Bella e la Bestia.

Dalla fine della Prima Guerra Mondiale fino al New York degli anni trenta, Isaac Bashevis Singer ritrae la prima parte della sua vita in questa emotiva autobiografia. Nella prima parte, "Un bambino in cerca di Dio", l'autore ricorda la sua infanzia a Radzymin come figlio di un rabbino ortodosso assorbito dalle prime letture scientifiche e filosofiche. Con il tempo, e dopo essersi trasferito a Varsavia per tentare la fortuna con la scrittura, le donne iniziano a ossessionarlo tanto quanto la ricerca della verità e della conoscenza, e in "Un giovane in cerca di amore" raccoglie le sorprendenti e drammatiche intrighe dei suoi primi amori. Infine, in "Perduto in America", l'autore racconta gli oscuri anni di solitudine e depressione all'inizio del suo esilio negli Stati Uniti, dove emigra dalla Polonia all'alba della Seconda Guerra Mondiale.
