At the center of the story is Toby O'Dare, known as Lucky the Fox, a notorious contract killer living under various aliases. Once a man of promise, he now exists as a soulless figure, taking orders from a mysterious figure referred to as 'The Right Man.' The narrative begins in present-day Riverside, California, where Lucky finds solace at the Mission Inn, a place where he can drop his disguises. However, he is soon tasked with another assassination assignment. Amidst his grim reality, a mysterious seraph appears, offering him a chance to save lives instead of taking them. Lucky, who grew up in New Orleans with an alcoholic mother and a murdered father, once dreamed of becoming a priest, seeking refuge in rituals, history, and music. Now, he seizes this unexpected opportunity. Transported back to thirteenth-century England, Lucky enters a perilous world where Jews, despised and accused of heinous crimes, live under constant threat. As he navigates this treacherous landscape, his journey unfolds from medieval villages to the cities of London and Paris, evolving into a tale of danger, loyalty, betrayal, selflessness, and love.
