In an unnamed part of the Pacific Northwest, a speculative thriller unfolds, exploring a secret world and the end of all things. On a winter morning, Jane Smith, a software manager in her late forties, receives an envelope containing a key to a storage unit. Inside, she discovers a taxidermied hummingbird and salamander, along with a list of five endangered animals, signed 'Love, Silvina.' The creatures are linked to a notorious wildlife trafficking criminal and the message comes from Silvina, the daughter of a recently deceased Argentine industrialist, who was radicalized and viewed as an eco-terrorist. Although Jane has never met Silvina, her decision to take the items triggers uncontrollable events. Set against a backdrop of severe global warming and instability caused by predatory government actions and an intrusive security state, Jane grapples with the question, "Why me?" This haunting inquiry disrupts her life, leading her to confront the precariousness of her existence.
