Sloane Montgomery, a wealthy D.C. philanthropist, begins to suspect that the woman she hired to assist her recovery from surgery may be a thief—of her husband, reputation, and possibly her life. After a tragic event two years prior claimed the lives of their spouses, Sloane and Senator Whit Montgomery have found solace in each other and are ready to start anew. As Sloane re-enters the world of political events with her new husband, she also prepares for a hip replacement, a reminder of her long-standing battle with lupus. To aid in her recovery, they hire a home health aide, Athena Karras, who seems perfect for the job, even assisting with Sloane's charitable foundation. However, Sloane's health begins to decline, and Athena attributes this to her lupus. As time passes, Sloane's condition worsens, leading her to feel paranoid and suspicious. She questions Athena's probing inquiries about her foundation and past, and she becomes increasingly uneasy about the chemistry she perceives between Athena and her husband. What began as a helping hand turns into a web of doubt and fear for Sloane, leaving her to wonder if she can trust anyone in her life.
