Shortly after Trieste came under Italian control, a series of lectures was organized for the city's school teachers to help them embrace their new roles as citizens and officials. Giovanni Gentile, a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Rome, was tasked with opening the series, and the lectures form the basis of this volume. At my request, Gentile has revised the first chapter to remove some local references from the original context, while Senatore Croce has generously provided an insightful Introduction. This work transcends a simple treatise on education; it serves as both an introduction to the thought of one of the greatest contemporary philosophers and to the study of philosophy itself. If the teachers of Trieste could engage with and appreciate a philosophical discussion relevant to their profession, why shouldn’t educators in England and America do the same? This volume is published by Forgotten Books, which specializes in reproducing rare and classic works. Utilizing advanced technology, they digitally reconstruct texts, preserving their original format while correcting most imperfections found in aged copies. However, some flaws may remain to maintain the historical integrity of the work.
