Carnival in Venice, gondolas on the Grand Canal, colorful masks, jugglers, and musicians. Despite the cheerful scene, an ominous presence emanates from the old master oil painting that hangs in Professor Parmitter's office in Cambridge by the fireplace. On a bitterly cold January evening, the passionate art collector tells his former student Oliver about the dark power of the mysterious Venetian painting: it is said to have swallowed people, made the dead visible. A countess from Yorkshire wanted to buy the painting from the professor at any cost, convinced that her husband, who disappeared on their honeymoon, was trapped within it. Parmitter resisted, but soon regretted it. And Oliver is unaware that the story continues and the curse of the painting will pass to its next owner.
