The Bell Tolls for No One is a collection of previously uncollected short fiction by Charles Bukowski, showcasing his range as a writer. It begins with the illustrated, unpublished 1947 story "A Kind, Understanding Face," and includes his well-known underground newspaper column, "Notes of a Dirty Old Man," as well as hardboiled contributions to 1980s adult magazines. This anthology features genre stories and postmodern pieces that blur the line between fact and fiction. Born in Germany and raised in Los Angeles, Bukowski published his first story at twenty-four and began writing poetry at thirty-five, eventually releasing over forty-five books of poetry and prose. He passed away from leukemia in San Pedro, California, on March 9, 1994. Calonne has previously edited three other collections of Bukowski's uncollected prose and authored several critical studies, including Charles Bukowski and Charles Bukowski: Sunlight Here I Am/Interviews and Encounters 1963–1993 .
