The story of the destruction of Indian culture by the Spanish conquest in 16th century America. The eyewitness and narrator is Tatham Mound, a young Tocobaga warrior from Florida. To broaden his horizons, he joins a trader and travels with him throughout the southeastern United States. He learns about other tribes, their ways of life and religious rituals, encounters women who teach him love and become his companions, and comes into contact with the spirits of the dead, becoming the guardian of Indian myths and legends.
