She takes a position as a maid in a grand house near Edinburgh, working for the beautiful Arabella, the "missus." Though lacking in scullery skills, Bessy's ability to read and write makes her valuable. As she navigates her new role, she becomes intrigued by Arabella's peculiar requests, particularly the insistence that Bessy keep a journal detailing her daily chores and intimate thoughts. Arabella harbors her own secrets, including a deep, obsessive affection for Nora, a former maid who died under mysterious circumstances. Driven by curiosity, Bessy uncovers a troubling truth and, out of jealousy, executes a prank that spirals out of control, jeopardizing everything she has come to cherish. Despite being ensnared in a web of madness, ghosts, and lies, Bessy's loyalty to Arabella remains steadfast. As her past looms closer, she realizes that her new life may not be as secure as she thought. This compelling tale of secrets, hidden histories, and the complexities of loyalty and friendship showcases a vividly imagined heroine and establishes the author as a significant literary talent.
