Atena przekonuje Telemacha, by szukał wieści o swym ojcu. Późniejsze pieśni to historia Odyseusza. W swojej powrotnej wędrówce trafia on kolejno na wyspę cyklopa Polifema, wyspę syren, wyspę zamieszkaną przez nimfę Kalipso. Przez cały ten czas Penelopa trzyma zalotników z dala od siebie.
