The Case Study House program (1945–1966) was unique in the history of American architecture. Supported by the magazine Arts & Architecture, the program aimed to respond to the post-war building boom with prototypes of modern houses that were easy to replicate and affordable for the average American. The Case Study Houses, primarily located in the Los Angeles area, included 36 model homes commissioned from renowned architects such as Richard Neutra, Raphael Soriano, Craig Ellwood, Charles and Ray Eames, Pierre Koenig, Eero Saarinen, A. Quincy Jones, and Ralph Rapson. The guidelines included the use of techniques and modern materials developed or improved during the war. The results of the program were intended to redefine modern living and have an impact that extended beyond the United States to the entire world. This compact guide includes all the Case Study Houses with over 150 photos and floor plans, as well as a map showing the locations of all the houses, including those that no longer exist.
