Akcję zaczynamy śledzić ponad dwie dekady po tym wydarzeniu, gdy ludzkość zdążyła już przystosować się do koegzystowania z zombiakami. Właśnie tak: koegzystowania. Grant nie zdecydowała się bowiem na pójście w żadną ze skrajności – nie jesteśmy świadkami ani regularnej walki między zdrowymi i nieumarłymi, ani też nie obserwujemy desperackiej ucieczki zmniejszającej się w ekspresowym tempie populacji ludzi. Jest rok 2040 i wiele wskazuje na to, że zaawansowanie techniczne jest na podobnym poziomie co w 2012, z nielicznymi wyjątkami głównie z zakresu ochrony przed zainfekowaniem nowym wirusem. Zahamowanie progresu łatwo można wytłumaczyć dość niekorzystnymi warunkami zewnętrznymi (mam tu na myśli raczej mordercze zombie niż na przykład niesprzyjającą aurę) i trudno, żeby było inaczej – ludzkość, jeśli chciała, by gatunek przetrwał, musiała rzucić znaczne moce przerobowe właśnie w tym kierunku.
